One surmises you are a trifle freaky!!

I am forewarning you...this will certainly not be to everyone's taste, including my own...and that's the caution I'm giving you before you take a look at this video by Die Antwoord called I fink u freeky at the top of the post over on the excellent Burn Magazine blog ...now tell me you don't like it...not sure why I like it, but for some reason I do!!! It has provoked a good deal of discussion too. Not sure what I can learn from it other than push those boundaries and get out more!!!

  1. I fink this is great! Very catchy music and a video that could be watched repeatedly. I also love seeing the snakes, I used to keep snakes many years back.

  2. Oooh, I never had you down as a snake handler!!! The girl in this video is how I imagined Lisbeth Salendar to look from the Stieg Larson books, girl with a dragon tattoo etc. but with white hair. Really find this video compelling.

    1. very interesting! Yolandi Visser was actually approached (and refused) the part of Lisbeth Salander by David Fincher.

    2. Now that is freaky, I had no idea...but again I'm not surprised as she would have been very cool in that role. But she turned the role down...that's quite something in itself.

  3. Looking at his work it is amazing to see how he got into a "place" with his photography and has stayed there exploring it for years. He has an exhibition in Manchester this year I see - would be good to have a study day there, I'd be up for that! Thanks for the reference, now have to decide which book I want (maybe wait for Manchester and hope they are cheaper there..).

  5. Thanks for the link Penny... My kinda thing and I loved the video, very "Mad Max" in its imagery and the music reminded me of the Prodigy in their heyday when anti-establishment was their theme. This link has worked the opposite way for me and introduced me to a fantastic photographer ... might be worth a trip to Manc land this year... thanks for that, I love little surprises :)

  6. Hiya Adey, good to hear from you. I wouldn't say it's my cuppa of tea normally, but I really love it and keep returning to it...keep thinking my life is way too sheltered!! Yes, a visit to Manc has to be on the cards!

  7. Hi Penny

Watched the video a little while back; and think my initial reaction was similar to yours! Have watched it a couple of times since. Have to get my head round some of the imagery. For what it is worth, the girl in the group is Yolandi Vi$$er. She was one of the subjects of Roelof Van Wyk's "Young Afrikaner—a Self-Portrait" installation at the V&A Figures and Fictions exhibition.

  10. I cannot thank you enough for turning me on to Die Antwoord. My wife (Helen) is a classmate of yours and showed me the "I Fink U Freeky" video, and it was and is the coolest thing I have seen in I don't know how long.

I've since traced Die Antwoord through the net and have been bowled over by their originality and artistic energy.

I think one of the reasons why "I Fink U Freeky" works so well is because it is the product of a very accomplished photographer (in addition to the input of Die Antwoord) by the name of Roger Ballen.

  11. Oops, sorry, I should have read a little more carefully. I would have seen that you're fully aware of Mr Ballen.

  12. Hi Matthew, nice of you to pop by...no worries, it was the group that caught my attention first too. But it is ultra cool isn't it...it feels like there is something quite feral and raw about their material, very unique and somehow liberating...really looking forward to seeing Roger Ballen talk, hopefully he'll talk about this work.

    Regards

  14. I must have missed this post earlier. Realise now why the girl in the video seemed familiar - just shows how context is all! the video reminded me of 'Omega Man' - old film with Charlton Heston, although there's been a recent remake 'I am Legend' which seems much less sci-fi.

ps Blogger seems very picky about Wordpress Mike.
